Alcatraz Behind the Scenes Tour Tickets: Price, Availability & How to Get Them
The Behind the Scenes Tour is the Alcatraz ticket almost nobody gets. Not because it’s a secret — it’s listed right on the official booking page — but because each tour takes just 30 people, and those 30 seats routinely sell out weeks before the date. As of early October 2026, there was zero availability for the entire month: the first open tour we could find was November 19.
Why the Behind the Scenes Tour sells out first
It’s the smallest Alcatraz product by an order of magnitude. The Day Tour moves hundreds of visitors per departure across ~15 daily sailings. The Behind the Scenes Tour runs a single small group — 30 seats, one afternoon departure — for people who want the areas the standard tour doesn’t reach. Same 1.5-million-visitors-a-year demand, a thirtieth of the supply. When we checked the official inventory on October 8, every October date was gone while Day Tour seats sat open on those same days.
Behind the Scenes Tour price
$104.65 for adults (2026, from official inventory) — more than double the Day Tour’s $47.95 and well above the Night Tour’s $59.65. The premium reflects the small group and the extended access. You book only through Alcatraz City Cruises, departing from Pier 33. If you see it for more elsewhere, that’s a reseller markup.
What’s different about the Behind the Scenes Tour
- Small group, guided. Thirty people with a guide, versus the self-guided cellhouse audio tour hundreds do at once.
- Restricted areas. It goes into parts of the island the standard tours don’t reach — the areas that make it “behind the scenes.”
- One shot a day. A single afternoon departure (around 2:15 PM), so there’s no “try the next sailing” fallback.
- Books out the furthest. In our tracking it consistently has the longest sold-out horizon of any Alcatraz tour.
When does the Behind the Scenes Tour sell out?
Weeks ahead — further out than the Night Tour, which itself sells out days ahead. If you’re planning a San Francisco trip around this tour, book it before anything else. A month of lead time is not excessive; six weeks is safer in summer.
How to get Behind the Scenes tickets when they’re sold out
With only 30 seats per tour, a single cancellation is a meaningful event — and cancellations happen constantly. Plans change, flights shift, groups shrink. Every cancelled seat drops straight back onto the official calendar with no waitlist in between. The problem is purely speed: with this few seats, reopened spots last minutes, not hours.
That’s the whole product. SoldOut Watch monitors official Behind the Scenes Tour availability every few minutes. The instant a cancellation reopens a seat on your dates, you get an alert with a direct booking link. free to watch — $19 only when we deliver. Start watching free →
Behind the Scenes vs. Night Tour vs. Day Tour
- Scarcity: Behind the Scenes sells out weeks ahead; Night Tour days ahead; Day Tour rarely sells out fully.
- Price: $104.65 vs. $59.65 vs. $47.95 (adult, 2026).
- Group size: 30 people vs. hundreds per departure.
- Experience: Behind the Scenes adds guided access to restricted areas; Night adds the guided evening program and after-dark atmosphere; Day gives you the island in full light with the most departure choices.
If the Behind the Scenes Tour is sold out for your whole trip, the Night Tour is the next-scarcest experience — and the Day Tour is the same island, done excellently. But if you want the restricted areas, there’s no substitute: check live availability or set a watch.
